NexGen Energy, Bella Energy to develop 2.6MW solar project in Salt Lake City

EBR Staff Writer Published 02 September 2010

NexGen Energy, an owner and operator of distributed renewable energy systems, and Bella Energy, a solar projects developer, have secured a contract from the Salt Lake County to develop 2.6MW solar project atop the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City.

The project, which will install up to 2.6MW of solar modules on the structure, is expected to generate more than 3,330,000kWh of electricity every year, while reducing the building's consumption by 25%.

NexGen Energy and Bella Energy, which won the contract through a competitive RFP process, expect to begin construction on the project later this year.

Under the terms of the contract, Bella Energy will design and install the project, while NexGen Energy will own and operate the facility and sell the power generated by the solar panels to Salt Lake County at a fixed rate for 20 years.

The contract, which will enable NexGen Energy to retain the renewable energy credits associated with the project, also includes an option for the County to purchase the system in the eighth year.

NexGen Energy vice president Ted Rose said that with this project, Salt Palace is setting a national example for renewable energy.

"With a ground-breaking public-private partnership driving it, this project will place Utah at the forefront of solar development," Rose said.
