AU Optronics Participates Creation Of Solar Frisbee Roof At TES

Published: 17-Nov-2009

AU Optronics Corp. (AU Optronics) is ready to launch its Solar Frisbee Roof project at the Taipei European School (TES). The Frisbee-shaped solar roof provides a playground for children, while also sheltering them from sunshine and rain. The roof was constructed from 32 photovoltaic modules with a capacity of 210 W and with an output of 6.8 kWp. It can generate 6,205 kWh annually, resulting in an estimated reduction of 3.95 tons of carbon emissions.

Co-financed by the German Federal ministry of economics and technology, the TES solar project is a German Energy Agency (dena) Solar Roof Program. Abakus Solar AG, a2peak power, and AU Optronics cooperated on this project, working together on everything from system design to solar module manufacturing.

As one of the project coordinators, AU Optronics expects that its sponsorship of the PV Frisbee at the TES and its role as project coordinator will help AU Optronics and its Solar business partners to promote BIPV applications globally. The project will also provide a model for the best practices of a BIPV project in Taiwan.

“AUO is devoted to being a global leader in Green Solutions,” said L. J. Chen, president and CEO of AU Optronics. AU Optronics restructured its energy office in October 2009 and formally founded its Solar Photovoltaic Business Unit, with an aim to showcase its rapid development in the solar PV industry. With the establishment of a dedicated R&D team, AU Optronics's solar business, guided by a strategy of providing total solutions, has been proactively developing the value chain of its energy business, offering integrated technology and services. AU Optronics has been closely cooperating with solar system providers at the end market and rapidly accumulating experience and technology through the execution of large projects.
