BP Solar Starts Construction Of Solar Energy Project At PVC In Blythe, California
Published: 19-May-2009
BP Solar International Inc. (BP Solar) has started construction on a new solar energy generating facility at the Palo Verde College campus in Blythe. The project is being built under a power purchase agreement between the college and BP Solar. The agreement, which will run for 20 years with a five-year extension, calls for BP Solar to finance, install and operate the system at no upfront cost to PVC. The college will purchase power from BP Solar once the facility is completed.
Target completion date for the project is August 2009.
The facility will feature a 1.2 megawatt ground-mounted photovoltaic system located on eight acres at the north side of the campus. It will be connected into Southern California Edison’s system and is expected to provide around 80% of the campus’ current electricity usage.
BP Solar offers the lowest lifetime cost of energy, based on its 35 years of experience and superior module reliability. This solar photovoltaic system is designed for long-term performance and reliability and is an excellent example of the value that energy from the sun can bring to customers such as PVC.
Prime contractor is McBride Southern California. Styers Enterprises of Blythe is a subcontractor on the project, and California Construction Management is overseeing the project on behalf of the college. About one-third of the 25 to 30 workers currently on site are local residents.
