Edison International’s (Edison) California utility is seeking California Public Utilities Commission permission to invest $30 million of customer funds on three fuel cells to advance the technology of the low-carbon power source. Edison is planning to install a fuel cell each at the California State University campuses in San Bernardino and Long Beach, and a third fuel cell at the University of California in Santa Barbara.
Two fuel cells would be linked to combined heat and power generation facilities to produce 1 megawatt of power, while the third fuel cell would produce 200 kilowatts operating.
In its request to the California Public Utilities Commission, SoCal Edison said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and other state agencies support development of fuel cells as they produce fewer greenhouse-gas emissions and other pollution than traditional fossil-fueled power plants. However, Edison said as no incentives have been offered to utilities to invest in fuel-cell technology, there has been little development.
